The Law requires that any trailer with a MTPLM (GVW) exceeding 750kg must have a working braking system. If such a trailer becomes detached from the tow vehicle then these brakes must be applied automatically, by way of the breakaway cable.
There are two types of breakaway cable in use in the UK. These are:
• Spring Clip. This type is designed to be hooked back over the breakway cable to connect the 'trailer' to the tow vehicle. IT MUST NOT BE DIRECTLY ATTACHED TO ANY FIXED MOUNTING POINT.
• Karabiner type. This type is designed to be secured onto a mounting point on the tow vehicle. It does not need to pass back over the cable to secure it in place.
Note: Ensure that when the cable is fitted, it does not drag on the road and passes through the cable guide fitted on the overrun/A frame.
Note: Always ensure the caravan hitch is correctly engaged over the towball before setting off. If the hitch has an indicator for correct engagement, make sure it's green.
